Feelings On NOLA Tech
Everybody has their thing. For a friend of mine, its wine. For my barber, it’s home-brewed beer. But for me, it’s technology. It’s an obsession, passion, and drug. It’s my thing. I’ve been called a geek, computer guy, wise kid, and nerd. I view them all as compliments.
Usually people don’t associate technology with New Orleans. Words like food, parties, and Mardi Gras come to mind but not technology. As somebody who is into technology I started to see all the good that was happening in regards to the tech community in NOLA. But I also saw that no one else was covering it. Yea you heard me right: nobody. Go ahead, check for yourself. No local bloggers, no big media outlets, etc. Maybe a nice article or two every once in a while but nothing ongoing. Always looking for something to get my hands into, I set out to create an organization that talked about the technology in New Orleans. Something that would highlight the technology community in New Orleans: NewOrleans Tech
With the help of four other brilliant local tech minds, we launched in September 2009 and since then I’ve been amazed at the support from the community, the in-depth journalism that has taken place, and being called the “TechCrunch of New Orleans” (see: TechCrunch). But I also know that we still have a long road ahead of us. My hopes in 2010 is that we become a staple in New Orleans for tech news, not just within the tech community. Even though our growth has been exponential, we’re still small fish in a big pond. What’s even more exciting is that fact that we get to do what we love. We’re geeks so we live, breath, and eat this stuff. We’ve even got tech news for ya mama and dem and plan to expand our readership over time.
I love NewOrleans Tech and the people behind it. My hopes are that we’ll take baby steps in 2010 and put those feathers in our cap that everyone always talks about.
